ELDERLY & SPECIAL NEEDS

Services for Mature Pets and Special Needs

We are sensitive to the concerns of older and special needs pets and dedicated to their safety and wellbeing.

Disqualifying Conditions

Unfortunately, if your pet has any of the following concerns they will not be able to stay with us:

  • Complex medications: medications that are being tapered or that need to be given more than two times daily. Your pet must be medically stable.

  • Blindness

  • Diabetes

  • Torn ACL that is in the acute phase and the pet cannot bear weight on that leg.

  • Staples or sutures (stitches)

  • Mobility issues: your pet must be able to climb up 3 stairs independently. Pets that have difficulty standing or walking on their own or have weak hind legs are not well suited for our environment.

  • Cone: we can not board any pet that is required to wear a cone for any reason.

  • Wounds or any open skin areas requiring medication or monitoring including dressings.

  • Injured foot/pad that has open area.

  • Conjunctivitis or “pink eye”, coughing, or runny nose

  • Diarrhea

  • Severe separation anxiety

  • Cats on medications

Elderly and special needs pets

While we can accommodate many special needs your pet might have, our environment is best suited for pets that are active and in good health.

Mature Dogs

We strongly recommend that you sign your senior dog for either walks or playgroups. It is easy to watch your senior dog lie around at home snoozing the day away and you might feel they don’t require exercise while boarding. However, you would be pleasantly surprised how much a little exercise will help your senior dog and how it can vastly improve the quality of their visit with us.

Exercise stimulates tissues as it increases blood flow, preserving mobility while helping your senior pet adjust to being away from home. One on one time with a staff member and a change of scenery always helps to keep spirits up. In addition, exercise helps bowel function enormously.

This is especially important in older pets. Without adequate use, muscles weaken and atrophy. When making your boarding reservation, consider a playgroup or walk as an add on service.
